Pardon Me While I Blaze Some Trails. Trailblazer: Elizabeth Freeman (MumBet)
Elizabeth Freeman, (AKA MumBet), was the first enslaved African American to file AND WIN her freedom. She decided to seek her freedom after hearing a public reading of the Declaration of Independence. In 1781 the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling found slavery to be inconsistent with the State Constitution.
“Any time while I was a slave, if one minute's freedom had been offered to me, and I had been told that I must die at the end of that minute, I would have taken it just to stand one minute on God's earth a free woman.”
As part of my art exhibit, PARDON ME WHILE I BLAZE SOME TRAILS, I'm creating art centering around trailblazing women throughout history. To learn more about my show and to support please click on the image below.
