SINGLE IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Interview with Annie Wood

When the television show "Bzzz!" hit the airwaves, all the entertainment trade papers raved about the host of the show, Annie Wood, and likened her to such legendary platinum blonde stars of the past like Jean Harlow and Mae West. Not having interviewed those stars, its hard to say whether or not they are correct. But after spending time with Annie Wood, I can tell you she is a lot more that media-hype. True she is spunky, perky and funny...all the things you already know if you were a fan of the dating show "Bzzz!" But what one quickly finds out the minute you say hello to her in person is that this "star" is genuine, with soul and a multitude of talents.

Born in Hollywood to parents in their forties, she was raised in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles with two older brothers who were ten and twelve when she was born. Learning to survive in that household of adults and semi-adults initially produced a very shy little girl. But not for long! Soon the Annie we know today began to emerge. Wise beyond her years, signs of her determination and dedication to a life in show business began to surface. Annie would often declare to her family that she is famous...:it's just that nobody realized it yet!"

So how did the "shy" little girl, metamorphose to a tomboy, then class clown and then to the sparkling star of the business of being single? Simple...she worked at it, and continues to work at it. Theater and performing have been her life since she was quite young, with her debut in front of a theater audience coming at the age of 12. But she continued to work to expand her talents. She studied the Stanislavsky "Method" technique of acting , as well the Sandy Meisner technique. She broadened her comedic abilities by working with a series of improv groups. And she worked and won awards; in 1987 she was awarded the "Outstanding Comedic Actress" Award for her portrayal of the Nurse in Romeo & Juliet at LA's famous Ahmanson Theater, and was featured in films playing opposite such stars as Kevin Spacey and Rita Rudner. But despite the fact that the awards and accolades were increasing, despite the fact that the acting jobs were increasing, Annie, like most soon-to-be stars, found it necessary to take odd-jobs from time to time. She sold bonsai trees, recycled compact discs by making them into earrings, was a tastetester fro a frozen pizza company and manufactured rainsticks. And it was an odd job that opened the back door that led to her Hosting the syndicated show "Bzzz!" She went to work as a Contest Coordinator for Ralph Edwards & Stu Billet a few days later and told him he was giving up too soon, telling him all the show needed was a perky, spirited Host. In fact she said, "You need someone just like me." Stu Billet took her feedback with a chuckle. But shortly thereafter he decided to give the show another go and redo the demo using Annie as the host, full well intending to hire some celeb Host if the show sold. Well the show sold, but it sold based on Annie Wood as the Host of the Show and soon, people all over the world began to recognize she was famous...just as she had said, many years ago.

She still continues to receive fan mail from around the world, a lot of it seeking her advice on dating. Several production companies are talking to her about hosting other dating shows. In fact, for a time, she was writing an "Advice on Friendship: column for a magazine. With so many of her offers and her worldwide identity being tied up with being single, I wondered if that was presenting a challenge to her own "dating" life ... if perhaps she even worried about a serious marriage proposal hurting her "career". But true to style, Annie gave me a spirited "no" ... then explained that she was ready for whatever path the Universe opens up for her, while in the meantime she's working on broadening her options and understanding of the world, and is awaiting the publishing debut of her book of essays.

As to men, she says she has been very lucky in some respects. She has crammed a lot of living into the twenty some years she's been alive, and has delightfully been lavished with a lot of wonderful relationships. Admitting that she is prone to jumping right into a relationship and giving it everything she's got, sometimes loosing a bit of herself, Annie says the demands of a daily television show helped put perspective back into her life. She's working hard on trying to understand how to achieve the balance between being fully in love with her soulmate and remaining the ever-developing Annie Wood. Fame has made dating a little harder these days, and she dislikes the fact that she has to ask the question of whether someone is asking her out because they like her, or because she is famous. But then she adds laughingly that dating has always been like auditioning for a good role ... the auditions have just gotten a little stiffer. But getting a little more serious she noted that dating has gotten tougher for everyone. Annie says she's noticed in conversations with her single friends that there seems to be a lot more mistrust out there in the dating world, a lot more pressure to focus on career because of concerns about the future, and a lot more pressure to get involved in a monogamous relationship because of sexually transmitted diseases. But then her eyes light up and she adds, "but I still like being in love with that special someone!" Is there a special someone in Annie's life right now? Well, yes and no. Her dog Addie is definitely special and has a very big place in her heart, but as far as having that special someone...Annie is still in the auditioning process?
